Akshita Gandhi (b. 1988, India) is a photographer and multimedia artist based in Mumbai. Gandhi investigates home and belonging while grappling with colonialism and the social and visual ramifications of India’s contradictory capitalist structure. Centering on urban landscapes and spaces, her photographs enhance architectural elements through repetition and distortion resulting in painterly renditions of escapism. Her Pin Code series unfurls the nuances of the “city of dreams,” and extends beyond the cacophony and clangour of Mumbai. In the mixed media painting, lightbox, textile and poetry series Freedom, I Read Banned Books (2019-2021) she advocates breaking free from patriarchal structures. Using light as a guiding principle, Gandhi’s work speaks to the transformative power of artistic practice merging photography, painting, resin, gold leafing, resin and collage. Pushing her boundaries, she has ventured into creating collaborative music and video pieces to give her viewers an immersive experience. Gandhi oscillates between interfaces of obscurity/perceptibility and construction/de-construction pushing the boundaries of visual experience. Gandhi has exhibited widely in India and internationally.
